We just got back from NYC. We saw two Broadway plays, one musical, and the opera. We fought our way through the throngs to see the window displays near Rockefeller Center and through an obscene mob at the Museum of Natural History. The Frick Museum was a nice respite from the madding crowd, however. We were so gun shy by the time New Year’s Eve rolled around that there was no way in Hell’s Kitchen we were going to go near Times Square to see the ball drop.

The Present with Cate Blanchett — amazing! To be fair, I think Cate Blanchett is the best actress of my generation. I was drooling to get these tickets to see her work live. The Chekov adaptation was funny, poignant, and flashy. One line in particular stuck with me. Misha was bemoaning with incredulity that he’d ended up a “school teacher” when he’d had hopes of becoming a writer. Ouch.
Matilda the Musical – the kids were great, but the headmistress was fabulous. “She” really made the whole show for me.
The Magic Flute @ The Metropolitan Opera – amazeballs. Julie Taymor’s puppets were used to masterful effect. Voices were so good I teared up just listening, especially to the coloratura.
The Front Page with Nathan Lane – disappointing to me, but my ten-year-old somehow loved it best of all. Could have been so much funnier.
I got a shiny new Harry Potter-themed Moleskin to write down my resolutions. Should I share them?
